about

Seven is the perfect number. It is said to communicate a sense of fullness and completeness. It makes sense that we had to wait until the seventh Obliti Devoravit release to get the long-awaited full-length. Since 2011, OD has been perhaps the greatest asset to all of CSR. Each release is meticulous and growing in power. UNDER MY MICHIGAN SKY is an explosion of creativity and sound. While there is a more potent post-rock influence than ever before, do not be fooled… this is a teeth-out Black Metal record. A true journey, meant to be listened to in whole, uninterrupted. “Cleansing Water” sets the scene before pushing open the door, not with a kick, but in the style of OD, slowly. Deliberately. “Turned To Poison” stands in the doorway, proudly and unrepentantly metal. Blazing harmonizing guitars, pounding drums and ghastly vocals break way to the exact kind of mid-tempo domination that encapsulates the power of OD. The title track is an absolute masterwork. The most painful and beautiful song I’ve heard all year. Acoustic and clean guitars layered amongst the heavy walls of distortion, and what is undoubtedly the greatest vocal performance in the history of the label. It is not to be missed. Perfection. “Robin’s Egg” is the quiet turning point that calls to mind the hazy post-rock of the early 2000s. Beautiful melodies accelerate ever slow slowly in fuzz towards the finale, “Down At The End Of The Fields.” A reminder that black metal is at its best when it’s pulled from oceanic pain and loss. - Damian Master

IN ARTIFEX VERBA:

“These songs were written in remembrance and tribute to a lost loved one. The grief came in waves and I often felt crushed under their weight. I soaked in the tears of lament for years and through that process these songs poured from me. There was depression, desperation, internal pressure, guilt, and disgust inside of me. The one that I lost felt none of those things anymore. These are songs of rebirth through that pain and sorrow. I wade in the greenish-blue water and feel the waves wash over me. He will be remembered. Together, Under My Michigan Sky.” - TL, USA, 2023.
