I STARED INTO THE BACK OF THE ROOM IT WAS COVERED IN A MILKY HAZE A LAMP ON THE MIDDLE OF AN OAK TABLE HAD A 60 WATT BULB THAT PRODUCED 800 LUMENS OF LIGHT DIFFUSED BY A LEOPARD SKIN LAMPSHADE RATED FOR INDOOR USE ONLY AND I COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING I STARED INTO THE BACK OF THE ROOM AND MOVED MY EYES TO THE DOOR I LOOKED DOWN AND RIGHT WHERE THE CARPET MET THE IMITATION PERGO FLOORING THERE WAS A BROWN AND WHITE BUNNY RABBIT STANDING ON ITS BACK LEGS. I COCKED MY HEAD AND IT DID THE SAME SHE LOOKED AT ME AND SAID “YOU WILL NEVER LEAVE THIS ROOM.”

In our apartment In rare moments Clouds break Light falls And house plants Make shapes Across the floor Or swooping crows Shade us But little else changes We burn lavender candles We peel fruit and eggs and drink coffee All morning We watched her feed A palm print smudged between Poised as if to grasp from air At any time this little life Suspended there In rattling atoms Beyond the glass I could not wipe it away Though I longed to see clearer This moment I feared she’d flee And we would too that feeling Of wings beating So fast our eyes Focused in could not see Anything at all Beyond her All of our life this hope To have one thing so much the rest just vanishes That night I dreamt we drank sugar water And kissed again for the first time ——————————————— The following day at the trailhead An old woman pointed upward in a clearing As we walked by at two butterflies “They used to be everywhere,” she said But you never see them anymore.” We stopped to watch You didn’t know them But I did

All at once It came back to me And then I thought more And I think it was only a small piece Sunk into the front seat Turning the wheel over and over Driving hard into pink rain Falling sick into the arms Of a love locked away in time If I walked through the door Into what I would think would be The everlasting arms Would they reach out for me Would she fall to her knees and scream Or will I have to be dead to be That kind of loved again

about

All funds from the sale of this release will be donated to The Bail Project (bailproject.org).

"The Bail Project, Inc. is an unprecedented effort to combat mass incarceration at the front end of the system. We pay bail for people in need, reuniting families and restoring the presumption of innocence. Because bail is returned at the end of a case, donations to The Bail Project™ National Revolving Bail Fund can be recycled and reused to pay bail two to three times per year, maximizing the impact of every dollar. 100% of online donations are used to bring people home."
