Watermelon Milk

style over substance
she said with a smile
as i wrapped all the words
into parcels for home
i took them and creased them
like pages in books
where the lines are so heavy
they warrant closer looks
the face of the summer
the body of my fall
sure strides in heavy footwear
never lacked conviction
or been too good to sleep on the floor
or been one to come in without closing the door
we have a special bond
it’s right and it’s wrong
if i was a lightning bolt
you’re my key on a kite string
let it fly let is loose let it go
let if flow like a river running down below
i’m not here to make a friend
or to take inventory
i’m here to take your hand
and write about it in my story
palm the fruit and ring it up
i don’t have to steal
i can buy it outright
i know how it tastes
over and over
my Kilimanjaro
your summit of soft skin
no base camp for a wild man
sever the ropes and let’s swing from the ice
count backwards from ten and let’s see if we die
the sun soaks the fruit bowl
on my windowsill
i am drunk on the freshness
and high off chlorophyll
seeds in my teeth
and your neck on a leash
lay perfectly still
drinking watermelon milk

Ch Ch Cherry Pit

naked on the tree
arms hold the cherry
sun-bright
summer sweet
secret creation
delight of my eyes
lick the top
down to the bottom
marvel at the shape
taste the reason you cannot sleep
magnify the eyes
wider still
hiding nothing
two stars in the sky
let me in
let me return
do you want do die
do you want to burn
someday soon
you will see me
towering above you
like high noon
will you bear down
or clamp tight
pinned to the wall
prepared to drown
or die in the flame
of the one who found you
say it to me
i want to hear my name
someday soon
you will see me
when the light breaks open wide
i can only promise
what i can give
it's more than you've ever felt
one night is better than a lifetime

Young Grapefruit

slide slide slide slide
slick lipped and wet revive
raise the steeple of my church
and hear the two bells chime
lay lay lay
lay down at my side
fan out upon the cutting board of both my hands
safety is a chance
with a knife to your back
the collar bone breaks
and i bury your body in sand
glide glide glide
glide down the steps inside
the second story of the old vaulted ceiling shrine
into the framed out box, next to the neon clock
beside the girl in bed, wearing nothing but socks
a field of green
and a hair tie on the floor
of the bathroom,
where the tile is as cold as winter’s war
i took a bite of that young grapefruit
time time time time
write it out across the sky
bend the oxygen like a paper clip and try
to see if you can hold it tight between your thighs
if you faint i will wake you, but I’ll make it seem nice

somewhere out there near the edge
of the ocean, or close thereby
in black nylon and shiny nails
and heels lifting up so high
can you read me
can you hear me
light the candle
pray while kneeling
distant darkness
and sinking feeling
i don’t remember
when the sunshine
felt as good as it does right now
all the heat and all the light
keep melting all this dirty snow
all around me
it feels like spring
and still you have to cry
on your birthday
it’s such a shame
orange blossom
taking over
sweet and citrus
rings me every night
orange blossom
light as feathers
white as the snow that stood here
taking over
taking over
take it off
so i can see it
orange blossom
soft like honey
pure and crystal
sharp and sweet
