Je ne sais pas exactement comment traduire le titre Flying Ointment. Ma première hypothèse, c'est "Pommade qui donne la faculté de voler" et elle fait sens parce que le synthé a un rôle plus important ici et, malgré quelques phases cauchemardesques, les ambiances sont mystiques et libératrices. Mais, sachant que Old Nick prend un malin plaisir à rendre ce remède inaccessible, caché derrière un raw black metal technique (practitioner arrache tout !), il s'agit peut-être d'une "Pommade volante"...

N'espérez pas voir les fastes et le luxe de la vie de château dans Witch Lymph : dans ce premier tour du propriétaire, le trio américain de Old Nick nous fait visiter les cryptes. Le raw black metal vampirique rebondit contre les murs épais et les synthés surannés percutent les barreaux des cellules. Peut-être que la guerre menée plus tard par Curta'n Wall, elle se fait contre le château d'Old Nick. En même temps, vu tout ce qui a l'air de se passer là-dedans, c'est peut-être pour le mieux...

Au moyen-âge, la justice des hommes était expéditive : après avoir prouvé qu'une femme était une sorcière en comparant son poids avec celui d'un canard, elle était brûlée sans ménagement. Chez Old Nick, ça fonctionne à l'envers : dans Witch Of The Northern Vill, ce sont elles qui font la loi et les synthés sont là pour nous apprendre à avoir peur d'elles jusqu'à en claquer des dents (sur la piste éponyme). Pleines de personnalité, elles sont mystiques, grandioses et sournoises — et drôles !

Old Nick - Forest of Grief

Pour Forest of Grief, son premier album, Old Nick décide de passer aux choses sérieuses : une pochette lugubre en nuances de gris chargée de symboles satanistes dessinée par un vrai graphiste, des thèmes mélancoliques et mortuaires à la pelle, et enfin un raw black metal médiéval. Mais pas de demi mesure chez Old Nick : les synthés ont le droit à leur quart d'heure de gloire. Accordéons, chiptune et effets en tous genres nous entraînent vers un passé ancien mais pas comme on s'y attend. Décalé !
